Lube up, today!
The skincare product industry is worth millions in terms of advertising today. Open any woman’s magazine and you will find a skincare product advert on just about every second page. We are bombarded with cleansers and repairing moisturizers for every skin type, not to talk about rejuvenating night creams, firming neck creams, age defiant serums or even self-tanning drops. And it goes on and on. Famous models and film stars support and underwrite these products with their faces splashed all over the media.
In contracts, you hardly see an advert for personal lubricants in any magazine if at all. No famous faces and bodies associate themselves with these products. We grow up neglecting our most sensitive, intimate body parts. Your mother may give you the talk about the birds and the bees, yet I am convinced that she never mentioned a word about personal lubricants. Am I right? She has probably been suffering for years with dry, painful intercourse not knowing that help is just around the corner.
Women somehow believe that self-lubrication is it. Men are even more ignorant not understanding the role of lubrication in a pleasurable sexual experience at all. The more adventures who practice anal sex, may have experience with the use of personal lubricants. But even then, little effort is made on investing in a product that is healthy and formulated for its purpose. We somehow believe that any oil-based lubricant such as Vaseline, KY Jelly, etc. will do the trick, having very little knowledge of the impact of such on our sensitive anal tissues.
I am somewhat surprised at the lack of general knowledge pertaining to personal lubricant. Young girls often spend money on buying new adult toys but refrain to spend a cent on a personal lubricant. Older women often suffer from a dry vagina for various reasons yet may not know where to turn too so we will share some wisdom re this topic today. When it comes to choosing a lubricant, always consider two things: your comfort and your safety. Comfort refers to your sexual pleasure; the amount and longevity of the lubricant can make a difference in how good the sexual activity feels, and whether the lubricant irritates your genitals. Safety refers to your health; oil-based lubricants can often not be used with latex condoms or silicone toys, as they can destroy the latex and silicone causing condom failure.
There are three types of lubes to consider: water-based, oil based and silicone-based. Water-based lubes with synthetic glycerine are the most commonly sold lube on the market. Most flavoured lubricants and warming lubricants contain glycerine. When water-based lubes start to dry, add water or saliva rather than just adding more lube, as the water makes it slippery again. Water-based lubes are more comfortable, stainless and less sticky or tacky. We will discuss the issue with glycerine in another blog. Watch the space.
Silicone lubes are thicker and typically good for menopausal women who have chronic problems with vaginal dryness or genital pain, anal penetration or women who need lubrication during penetration. Silicone is also good for shower sex as it won’t wash off easily. These last the longest of all and are especially recommended for women with chronic vaginal dryness or genital pain. Silicone lubricant cannot penetrate through the skin’s pores. Most silicone lubricants are hypoallergenic.
The main issue with oil-based lubricants is that it destroys latex condoms. It is safe to use with condoms made from nitrile, polyisoprene or polyurethane. Natural based oil lubricants are often found in your kitchen. The general rule is that if it’s safe to eat, it is safe to put on your vulva and inside your vagina. The body can clear out natural oils more easily than petroleum-based lubricants.
