To kegel or not to kegel
The fun of “Kegeling”
I bet most of you go to the gym once a week or may be even daily. We frantically exercise as it is the in thing. Doctors advise on the benefits of exercising; insurance companies tell you to keep in shape not to mention the medical aids. And then we also deal with the stereotype of being slim as you can only be happy and pretty when you are thin.
How many of you however think of strengthening your vaginal and pelvic floor muscles? May be a handful? Ladies, ladies, I know the poor thing is very rugged and can take a lot of pounding! But it also needs some nurturing………….
Exercising these muscles is much more fun than sweating in the gym. All you need is one small, weighted ball, called a Kegel ball or Ben Wa ball. Why not learn from our ancient “foremothers” who used these not to only contract the vaginal muscles but also to enhance sexual play.
Start with lightweight plastic or silicone balls if you are new to this. Sets typically contains two to three balls. We suggest you start with a two-ball set that is attached to and have a removable string. You can increase or decrease the number of balls as you become more comfortable. Over time you may want to upgrade to larger balls or even heavier balls. Some sets include a complete kit. Visit your favourite on-line toy store at www. thando.africa today to view a large variety of balls.
Cleanliness is of the essence as you do not want to introduce bacteria to your vagina. Wash your hands and the balls thoroughly with hot water and an antibacterial hand soap before and after use. Run them under water to remove excess residue. Pat them dry or let them air dry before storing in a safe location.
Apply a generous amount of your favourite water-based lubricant to the balls and your vagina before attempting to insert the balls one at a time. You may want to lie down with your legs spread or in a squatting position. Gently and slowly insert the balls, one at a time. The removal string should hang outside your vagina. The balls should always feel secure inside your vagina.
You may feel a subtle, tingly sensation that will intensify with movement such as walking, dancing bending, etc. Go about your day as usual, only you will know about your secret.
Try some targeted exercises to tone and strengthen your muscles once you are feeling comfortable. Tighten your muscles to squeeze the balls, hold for 5 seconds and relax for 5 seconds. Repeat 5 times to make up one set. Perform up to three sets per day. You can increase the number of sets performed over time or upgrade to a heavier ball.
Versatile Ben Wa balls can also be used for sexual play. Incorporate these in your solo activities or with your partner. Use your hands to explore other body parts while performing your exercises or use your favourite vibrator to stimulate your clitoris. Exercise has never been such fun.
You may also want to use your kegel balls to spice up partner play. Insert them before going out for the evening. The longer the balls are in the more aroused you will be. You can even leave them in during penetration. Slow thrusting will move the balls around for an intense experience.
Kegel balls are for vaginal play only. This is not an anal toy. Anal penetration can however push the balls against the G spot for a thrilling climax.
Do not leave the balls in for more than 6 hours a day. Remove the balls slowly pulling the removal string while laying down in a comfortable position.
As with regular exercise you may want to consult with your doctor especially if you are:
- are pregnant or recovering from childbirth
- have existing pelvic pain or an active pelvic infection
- are recovering from gynaecological surgery
- have an IUD
- use a menstrual cup
